Prepping

Every once in a while I'll get an itch between my shoulder blades and a vague feeling that something bad is coming down the pike.

I'm sure that to those of the "progressive" bent will call it "combat veteran paranoia" or other such nonsense.  Anyways the last time I got this "itchy" was in 2006 getting ready for a repeat terrorist event that never happened.  So I don't know why I'm feeling particularly unprepared and insecure now, but I am and so little by little the wife and I are getting ready to test a one week survival plan.  It won't be a true "survival" week because we'll have utilities, but it should test our food plan.  Later on we can do the "camp stove cooking" to test our resiliency for loss of utilities.

But, prepping really means "organizing" to a large extent, and for the last hour I set up the "shelving unit of the apocalypse" in the basement.  http://www.amazon.com/Raxa-Power-Garage-Shelving-Shelves/dp/B005EG44K2/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hi_5 I don't know if this is the same unit we bought at Costco a few years back, but it is the closest I could find on amazon.com

I also upgraded 9 milspec STANAG magazines with MAGPUL no tilt followers.  I chose yellow followers because I figure that it will make the mag easier to see if I drop it inadvertently after a mag change, and I'm not so tacticool that I need a seldom seen piece of kit to be an earth tone.  Still hoping to find more 20 rounders, but with the prices on the used market being what they are, I might as well purchase new 20 round MAGPUL poly magazines.

I was going to ask why on your last post why you hadn't considered the 20 round Magpuls.

I keep a few 20 rounders on hand for shooting off the bench when I'm testing loads. I measured the Magpul compared to a USGI STANG mag and the Magpul was 3/8' longer in front and 1/2' longer in back, mainly due to the floor plate.

Opps, I mean 5/8' longer in the front as measured from the bottom of the mag well.

What other types of prepping have you been doing? If you don't mind my asking. I've been prepping since way back in the 80's when all preppers were "Evul Survivalists and Militia's" For me it was just getting out of the reserves, seeing all the garbage going on. I mean we went into Grenada shortly after I got out of Basic, then there was Libya's "Line of Death" the shoot down of the KAL plane and it just continued from there. It just made sense to me, to make sure I had extra put back. Today it makes even more sense.

Joe, right now the 20 round MAGPULs aren't competition legal (last I checked). Since the MAGPULs are an issue item now I expect that to change in the future.

I guess I'll just have to get with the times.

Mark,

I've been following Graybeards solar power posts and looking into what would work for my family in our current "nomadic" lifestyle.

My apologies, I don't keep up with high power shooting although I'd love to learn more about shooting past 300 yards.

I always listen to that little voice in my head, because I have only regretted the times that I have ignored it. My hackles have been upright for some time. Keep your powder dry and keep prepping. Gary

Stay away from those POS shelves. They won't hold shit with their 3/8" particle board shelves, and the are a mother.... to assemble if any of the holes gets paint/powder coating in them. Spend less money, buy something local like 2x4 and plywood. At least you'll have something to burn after you've used up all your stores, and are eyeing the neighbors skinny ass as your next meal.

millerized,

So far those shelves are holding up just fine. And they successfully moved on our last PCS move.

So far you've been wrong on two accounts, so why should I think that you are even remotely close to reality about me resorting to cannibalism?
