The biggest reason that we are having a hard time in Afghanistan is the idea of "shared risk" with the Afghans. You can't live on a fortified FOB and earn the respect of those who have lived in a war zone their entire life. One of the big reasons why we see "TSA=STASI" sentiments coming up, and we make fun of the overweight douchebags who raid grandmas house in the "War on (SOME) Drugs" is that they are losing respect.
