When I was a scout in the First Cavalry Division, I loved wearing my black beret, my big brass "US" belt buckle, and my spurs.
I liked being in a unit that was different from other units, for ranger and cavalry units were the only ones who wore the black beret, and scouts were the only ones who wore spurs.
I still wear that beret when I go to a festival or parade, where I wear my kilt with all my Highlander regalia.
Yes, when in the field, it is better to wear something more practical, and in that case, I prefer the wide-brimmed floppy ranger hat.
By the way, do any of you guys know what TODAY is?
Today, Thursday 16 June 2011 is National Fudge Day!!!
Well, what do you intend to do about it?
Don't we have some sort of solemn patriotic duty on an all-American holiday such as this?
Thank you.

Raised by conservative Christian parents, enlisted in the Army at 18, used the GI Bill to finish college, and I'm back in the Army.
Along the way I've encountered a huge cast of characters, some I got into trouble with, some that passed on skills that have helped me on my life journey.

I remember when I was a young Sergeant going over to the beret.
We all hated it. Non-functional and all that.
Interesting to see the Army changing course on it.
