One step closer to the singularity....

6 core processors for the desktop...

My first dual core system (which I still have in the bone pile) was a PII Xeon 450mhz with 1meg lvl2 cache, nicknamed "Spaceheater".

Now you can buy a cheap laptop for under 400 bones with a dual core processor.

I can't wait to see when these 12 core Opterons  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819105267 drop down in price... Cause you can get dual socket Opteron boards....imagine, 24 processing cores in one box...

Do want.  Always wanted to build a Beowulf Cluster for the hell of it...

Pretty sweet. More capability than I can really justify claiming to "need" (as if need is the issue here) at the moment, but I can't help but be a bit jealous anyway.

Enjoy.

I'm going to wait to buy the hardware until 2012 since I *should* spend the bulk of 2011 on an all expenses paid vacation.

Some of that tax free pay will be saved up to build the dream box.

But I won't know until the official orders are cut. It is kinda funny, I get a heads up from Branch, which puts in a Request For Orders (RFO) to the installation, which cuts Permanent Orders (with official order numbers and everything) which are changeable until I actually sign in at the gaining unit. So hopefully Big Army says that Branch's plan for me is ok and my plan works out.

Cause if it doesn't, then I have to replan. And that means more work all around....
