Swords....

I was browsing Sipsey Street and came across a link for this post about swords...

First, any weapon is like any other weapon, you have to have it on you for it to be effective. So if you want to use a sword as a weapon you need to have it on you.

Second, carrying around a sword is a good way to advertise that you have a sword. No matter how many times you watch "Highlander" you won't be able to figure out how to carry a sword concealed.

Third, there are over 60 million gun owners in the US, who own over 250 million guns. If you run out of ammo, somebody else has some. My experience with the fall of civilizations is, when the fecal matter hits the rotary cooling device people manage to get their hands on guns.

Lastly, if you have a sword, and the disaster situation has lasted long enough to exhaust most everybody's ammo stores, then by golly maybe it would be cool to have a sword. Until you meet the guy who has a longbow, crossbow, compound bow, atlatl, spear, or javelin and knows how to use it.

I have a NICE 60lb longbow and a 75lb compound. I shall CONQUER FRANCE AND TAKE SARKOZY'S WIFE as my "WAR BOOTY!" I heard that they don't do well against archery. I'll take some French Military stuff along to blend in in case I need a firearm :-)

How much ammo could you get for the price of a sword? I imagine a sword that isn't made of Pakistani/ Chinese pot metal is probably at least a couple hundred bucks. Incidentally a case of 7.62x39 costs about that. I would rather beef up the ammo supply for firearms I already have.

Like so many things this isn't a bad idea per se. It is just a question of where it goes in terms of priority. To me this is after a black powder rifle/ pistol combo and before a case of wrist rockets which is about as low in terms of weapons as my list gets.

True, if you have a gun and ammo you can aquire a sword from someone who has a sword but not a gun or ammo.

Yes it's stealing, but survival isn't pretty.

However, like anything else, if you don't know how to use it then it isn't a tool, just a toy.
