You are never too good to double check after you've cleared a weapon, and never too cool to not obey the four rules.
I lost one of my snipers because of this. Over two years in a combat zone and he kills himself less than three weeks back by making a stupid mistake with his new revolver.

Completely agree. Made a comment to this effect on a conservative blog recently, however, and got branded a "gun-safety nazi".
That's why I still think the THREE RULES are better. If you say "all guns are always loaded" when they aren't really always loaded, people make allowances for guns that they "know" to be unloaded and accidents happen. The son of a friend that is a Police and NRA certified instructor made that mistake in middle school with a .410 shotgun, which, although not much of a shotgun, will kill your best friend when you are in eight grade...
NEVER, under any circumstance, point a funtional firearm at anything that you aren't willing to shoot.
Be sure of yuor target and what is beyond to the best of your abilities.
Keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you actually intend to shoot something.
Three simple rules. No accidents. Because even unloaded guns aren't pointed improperly, because sometimes unloaded guns aren't.
Sorry about your friend.
