In real security, if you aren't proflining then you are doing something wrong.
It may not be "democratic" and it definitely isn't "fair". But in matters of life and death democratic and fair have no place.
The argument that those who want to defeat security will defeat it eventually has no merit. Yes there are aryan looking terrorists and huge numbers of peaceful men of middle eastern descent. However, as long as you are profiling correctly, then it isn't racism, it is security.
And if it ISN'T security, then what is it? It is a sham, a nostrum, an exercise in societal masturbation fantasizing about security.
Profiling has a place, and as long as you can update your profiling criteria as the threat changes, it is a useful tool.

I'd have to agree. It's all about being able to recognize a threat.
The trick is recognizing what makes people threatening. Unfortunately too many people are still threatened by skin, and not enough people are recognizing real dangers.
The PROBLEM is effin' with the rest of us so you can pretend it doesn't look like profiling to the muzzie with the PETN in his rectum.
The muzzies get smarter and you dance in your underpants if you want to take a one way flight someplace even if you're dad's a Lt. Colonel and your Uncle was in GW's cabinet. Not that I take it personally or anything.
If you're going to fookin profile, it works for a bit and then it doesn't because the smart terrists figure out how to go un-dee-tected, but pretending not to profile and fookin' up EVERYBODY'S DAY is BS and everybody knows it.
In asymmetrical warfare, the terrist has the upper hand. If he can make people piss their pants about a drunk complaining he can't get one more beer and they divert the flight and fook up 1000 people's day without even having to explode themselves, they kick back and giggle.
Watch La Battaglia di Algeri some time and remember that every terrist in the world has watched that and they watched the most technologically advanced (militarily) in the world get trounced by little dudes, and it's a lot less simple than you make it.
You know that the main damage done against the swaddies in the Malvinas :-) was done by Argentine NAVAL aviation who only had 12 useful combat aircraft? 8 Skyhawks, 4 Super Etendards.
Asymmetrical warfare is a bitch but you LOSE if you profile too hard and that's what they aim for. Disrupting your society until you clamp down and the people go along with it. Hell, that's how Hitler came to power in Germany. Created strife with brown shirts and then promised to make them go away if electerated...
Guerrilla warfare is fought by people that have studied it and they use little kids and stupid people to be the human bombs, but they groom them properly for the job.
Did you know that in the Iran-Iraq war, the leadership set up a program where they gave mine locating prodding gear to children and called them "keys to heaven" and sent the little rugrats out to clear minefields.
Unfortunate on the part of the rugrats, but it worked pretty well for the people calling the shots that weren't 4 years old poking around for land mines with magic sticks in a chemical warfare battlefield.
If you play into their hands by profiling too heavily, you hobble your own economy at almost no cost to the terrorists, they laugh at you, you piss off millions of peacable people, and you don't catch many terrorists except the low hanging fruit that are MORONS that are probably recruited and planted so you have somebody to arrest...

Patton could have ended WW II in August of 1944 by being allowed to close the gap but they gave the job to Monty and wouldn't let Patton have gasoline and 100,000 German soldiers escapered.
Real world ain't internet BS about what would be ideal, you have to deal with the fact that people ARE going to screw things up because they WILL NOT LET YOU LIGHT UP EVERYBODY SUSPICIOUS.
It's what actually happens in most all war zones, and even gang turf wars amongst criminals, but most civilian "men and women on the street" are more comfortable with semi-randomly dropping 500lb iron bombs on orphanages on accident than taking the Mossad approach and swapping a dudes cellphone for one with plastique in it and command detonating his head off or Taking the "burnt out PTSD grunt approach" and lighting up anything that looks vaguely odd anywhere near your men.

The game's rigged, the players all know it, and profiling is a minor tool in the tool boxes compared to infiltrating the structures. It's a lot easier to take down a terrist group from the INSIDE than to try and catch them all at the subway/mall/airport/airplane/train/train station/shopping plaza, etc.
I should hope you get my point at this point and no insult was intended. I'm not pulling rank based on age but I HAVE been watching this go on longer than you and have had family and myself that lived in and visited trouble spots long before terrists came to America, other than the Weather Underground pukes that are now presidential advisors...
